RAB Racing Docked For Chicagoland Infractions

The No. 09 Toyota had issues
NASCAR has issued penalties to the No. 09 team in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, as a result of rules infractions found on July 22 during post-race inspection at Chicagoland Speedway.

Crew chief Scott Zipadelli has been fined $10,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Sept. 5 for violating Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4J (any determination by NASCAR officials that race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules detailed in Section 20A of the rule book or has not been approved by NASCAR prior to the event); 20A-2.3A (improperly attached weight); and 20A-2.4B (car failed to meet minimum weight requirements in post-race inspection). Car chief Travis Young has been placed on NASCAR probation until Sept. 5 for the same infractions.

Driver Kenny Wallace and owner Robby Benton have been penalized with the loss of six championship driver and six championship owner points for violating Sections 12-1; 12-4J; and 20A-2.4B.

COMMENTARY: Proposed Sprint Cup Qualifying Change Is Long Overdue

“Arranging Day” may no longer be a part of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race weekends in 2013.

Multiple sources say the sanctioning body is approaching drivers, crew chiefs and team owners seeking feedback on a major change to the Sprint Cup qualifying next season.

In recent years, the sanctioning body has awarded guaranteed starting spots to the Top-35 teams in owner points. Teams outside the Top-35 – known as “Go Or Go Home” teams – are left to fight over the seven remaining spots at the back of the field, with the final spot reserved for a Past Champion. The current system ensures that the sport’s biggest stars compete every week, but it saps all the excitement from qualifying day, since the vast majority of teams arrive at the track with a guaranteed starting spot already in hand.

While well-meaning, NASCAR’s current qualifying procedure has neutered “Qualifying Day” into “Arranging Day.” Most weeks, very few fans turn out to watch. And those that do are treated to a two-hour advertisement for Sominex.

NASCAR’s proposed new system could change all that.

If approved, the fastest 38 cars in time trials will qualify for the main event next season, regardless of the point standings. Positions 39-42 will go to the four highest-ranking point drivers who failed to qualify on time, with the 43rd position still awarded via Past Champion’s Provisional.

Fans won’t have to worry about Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., or Kyle Busch missing the cut on race day, since in all but the most extreme cases, a quartet of point-based provisionals will safeguard high-ranking teams. Sponsors can continue to rest easy, knowing that their multi-million dollar investment will almost certainly be a part of the field every Sunday. Smaller teams will also benefit, since there will be a whopping 38 starting spots awarded on speed each week, rather than the current seven.

It’s a win/win/win situation, and it is long overdue.

"In my opinion, he is the best in the business and we are fortunate to have someone of his caliber step in to help steer our team in the right direction during this important transition."

"We are fortunate to have David Hyder working at JTG Daugherty Racing as crew chief for the K&N Pro Series East team that we have been preparing each week for Cale Conley. Martinsville President Safe After Plane Crash

Martinsville Speedway president Clay Campbell was uninjured in the crash of a private aircraft early Sunday morning at Blue Ridge Regional Airport in Henry County, Va., near Martinsville.

Campbell and five pit crew members were returning from a NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race he competed in the previous evening. The grandson of Martinsville Speedway founder H. Clay Earles is listed as co-owner of the aircraft, which experienced problems during landing. None of the seven occupants – the pilot and six passengers -- were injured.

“I raced in a K&N Pro Series East race in Columbus, Ohio, earlier that evening, and we were heading home,” said Campbell. “The weather wasn’t idea, but it wasn’t that much of a problem, either. I didn’t fly the plane myself, because I was tired. I never fly after running a race, I always bring a pilot along.

“On our first approach, the weather was bad enough that we came in too high to land,” he said. “We aborted that landing and on our second approach, it seemed like everything was fine. We were focused pretty intently on finding the runway, and were able to spot the lights and come on down.

“Once we got down, had the wheels been where they needed to be, it would have been a perfect landing,” he said. “Unfortunately, they weren’t. We hit pretty hard, and when the propeller struck the ground, we found ourselves in the middle of a shower of sparks and flames. We went for a couple thousand foot slide and eventually slid off the runway into the wet, muddy grass. It actually helped slow us down, and eventually, we ground to a stop.

“We checked to make sure everyone was unhurt, then shut the engine down, turned the fuel off and walked away from it,” said Campbell. “Airplanes can be fixed, human life is different.”

Campbell said he is still unsure why the landing gear was not in place. “Numerous things were happening all at once,” he said. “I was pretty busy looking for runway lights, so I honestly don’t know if (the problem) was human error or a mechanical malfunction. Once we hit the ground, we obviously knew things were not the way they needed to be.”

Blue Ridge Regional Airport was the destination of the Hendrick Motorsports Beechcraft Super King Air 200 that crashed into Bull Mountain on October 24, 2004, killing 10 people aboard, including Rick Hendrick’s son Ricky, brother John and twin nieces.

Waltrip, NAPA Team To Help Colorado Wildfire Victims

Mikey dons the helmet for charity
NASCAR Sprint Cup team co-owner Michael Waltrip will make a special delivery Saturday in Colorado. Waltrip and NAPA Toyota driver Martin Truex Jr. are asking race fans to participate in the NAPA KNOWS HOW TO CARE campaign to benefit victims of the wildfires which swept across Colorado last month.
Fans may participate by making PayPal donations to the American Red Cross at www.michaelwaltripracing.com from now until Sunday, July 29.
Waltrip and NAPA management will deliver a check for $25,000 from NAPA AUTO PARTS during ceremonies before Saturday’s NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Colorado National Speedway. An additional check will be presented with the proceeds raised by online, local NAPA store efforts and at-track fundraising. Waltrip will be driving the No. 55 NAPA KNOWS HOW TO CARE Toyota in the event to raise awareness for the NAPA KNOWS HOW TO CARE program.
“We are racing in Denver and have this opportunity to show the great people of that region what NASCAR is all about,” said Waltrip. “We will be collecting donations from fans and partners and can deliver a message of support. Those fires cost more than $60 million to fight and burned more than 225,000 acres of land and they need our help.
“I love racing in the K&N West series events and it is a big weekend for NAPA which will be hosting almost 700 guests there. We wanted to do more than race, we wanted to help heal.”
Truex said raising money for the wildfire victims fits with NAPA’s effort to assist people in need.
“NAPA has done some great things helping families with the NAPA KNOWS HOW TO CARE program and I’m really proud to be able to join in helping the people of Colorado,” said Truex. “We have race fans all over the country and I know some of our fans lost their homes and personal belongings. They will have to rebuild and this is our small way of helping out.”
Waltrip will sign autographs at a NAPA fundraiser for the disaster relief fund Friday from 5-8 p.m. MST at the NAPA Denver Distribution Center, 2101 Highway 224, Denver, CO. NAPA will provide free hamburgers and hotdogs to the public. All donations can either be made in person at the fundraiser event, Colorado National Speedway, or you can simply text "RED CROSS" to the number 90999 to make a $10.00 donation.
"The wildfires have had a big impact on our state. Many of our friends and customers lives have been changed by this tragedy. This event is NAPA AUTO PARTS way of helping those in need and saying thank you to those who have risked their lives fighting these fires," said Will Rogers, District Manager of NAPA AUTO PARTS Denver Distribution Center.
“When disaster strikes, it’s hard to determine how to help, so we just hope by hosting this event and utilizing our resources we can help make a difference,” said Scott Carlson, General Manager of NAPA AUTO PARTS Denver Distribution Center.

Wallace Inks New Deal For Indy

Wallace will run the Brickyard
Hot off a season-best fourth place finish in the STP 300 at Chicagoland Speedway Sunday, Kenny Wallace has confirmed that he will drive the No. 24 SR2 Motorsports Toyota this weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“SR2 has fielded cars for Benny Gordon this season, and they did a deal with John Wes Townley earlier this year at Talladega,” said Wallace today. “John Wes is my teammate at RAB Racing, so there’s a relationship there. Family Farmers, American Ethanol and the National Corn Growers Association came up with some money a few days ago, and said, `Kenny, we want you in that race at Indianapolis.’ RAB Racing could not field a second car on such short notice, so I started asking around, and eventually got together with the guys at SR2 Motorsports.

“The car will be a Toyota Camry with a brand new Triad motor, and we’ll be locked into the race with enough tires to race competitively on.”

Wallace said the deal was completed before his fourth-place finish yesterday made him eligible for a $100,000 bonus through the Nationwide Dash For Cash program.

Sick Sadler Scores In Chi-Town

Point leader lliott Sadler shook off illness and a late-race surge by pole sitter and defending series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. to win the NASCAR Nationwide Series STP 300 at Chicagoland Speedway Sunday.

Sadler pads his point lead
Sadler caught a break when an ill-timed caution flag trapped Stenhouse’s dominant Ford deep in the field following a pit stop in the late going. Stenhouse slashed his way through the field and was closing quickly on Sadler when Sam Hornish, Jr. turned Kyle Busch’s Toyota into the outside wall, collecting Brendan Gaughan and triggering the race’s final caution with just seven laps remaining.

That stoppage erased Sadler's lead, but the Richard Childress Racing driver bested Stenhouse on a green-white-checkered flag restart, using a push from Justin Algaier to claim his third victory of the season and eighth of his NASCAR Nationwide Series career. Stenhouse finished second, followed by Allgaier, Kenny Wallace and Michael Annett. Austin Dillon, Parker Kilgerman, Hornish, Cole Whitt and Ryan Truex completed the Top-10.

"I knew we had to get a good restart there," said a hoarse Sadler in Victory Lane. "I knew Justin had to push me and push me straight."

"I felt like Elliott had good restarts all day and (Stenhouse) struggled a little bit," said winning crew chief Luke Lambert afterward. "I hoped that would work in our favor."

Sadler credited his doctor and pit crew for the win, which earned him a $100,000 bonus from the Nationwide Dash 4 Cash program. A lingering stomach virus left him at approximately 60% of capacity for the race, but he left Chicagoland Speedway leading Stenhouse by 11 points in the battle for the 2012 Nationwide Series title.

“The guys worked hard yesterday,” said Sadler. “We knew we had a good car on the long run, and we knew we had to make it better on the short runs today. Luke made a great call, made some good adjustments at the end. It was all about track position (and) our car was really fast out front.”

Quiroga Will Drive For Kyle Busch Motorsports

Quiroga to drive for KBM
Kyle Busch Motorsports will field a second NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Toyota in four upcoming races this season, with three-time NASCAR Mexico Series champion German Quiroga at the wheel.

Quiroga will drive the team’s #51 Tundra with primary sponsorship from prepaid wireless provider NET10 beginning at Talladega Superspeedway on Oct. 6, and concluding with the final three stops on the schedule; Nov. 2 at Texas Motor Speedway, Nov. 9 at Phoenix International Raceway and the Nov. 16 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Quiroga, the only driver in the history of the NASCAR Mexico Series to win multiple championships, captured three consecutive titles from 2009 to 2011 after finishing in the runner-up spot in the final series standings in both 2007 and 2008.

Since the Mexico Series became sanctioned by NASCAR in 2007, Quiroga has collected 16 wins, 52 Top-5 and 60 Top-10 finishes in 70 starts. The 32-year-old posted a 16th-place finish in his Truck Series debut with KBM at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon last September, and finished 26th in the 2011 series finale at Homestead-Miami after losing a lap due to a loose wheel.

"We're excited to have NET10 onboard as a partner and honored that they chose KBM for their first partnership in NASCAR," said KBM General Manager Rick Ren, who will also serve as the crew chief on Quiroga's #51 Tundra. "German showed a lot of promise in his two starts last year and our staff has been working really hard to try and secure the sponsorship needed to get him back in a truck this season.”

Buescher Regains Two Lost Laps, Wins Chicagoland Truck Series Thriller

Buescher wins again!
James Buescher rebounded from two lost laps due to a balky carburetor in Saturday night’s American Ethanol 225 at Chicagoland Speedway, then roared back through the field to overtake a dominant Brendan Gaughan and win his third race of the 2012 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season.

Buescher’s No. 31 Fresh from Florida Chevrolet Silverado started the 150-lap race on the inside of the sixth row and cracked the Top-10 by Lap 20 with lap times comparable to the leaders. On Lap 74, however, he radioed his crew that the engine had gone flat, robbing him of horsepower and causing his to fall backward through the field.

When the yellow flag waved for Jennifer Jo Cobb’s spin on Lap 82, Buescher brought his Chevrolet to pit road and the crew changed a malfunctioning carburetor. He returned to the track two laps in arrears and seeming out of contention.

He regained those lost laps by racing his way into position for a pair of “Lucky Dog” passes, regaining his lead-lap status for good on Lap 106. He passed 17 trucks in the next 20 laps to break into the Top-5, while Gaughan, Ty Dillon and point-leader Timothy Peters waged a spectacular, often three-wide battle for the lead.

Buescher (31) passed a lot of Trucks
A caution flag bunched the field for a Lap 141 restart, and Buescher wasted little time capitalizing, taking the lead just three laps after the restart. He fought off late challenges from both Peters and Gaughan, making a last-lap pass to capture his third Truck Series win of 2012 and his fourth overall. Gaughan finished second after spinning his tires on a late restart, then battling back to pass five trucks in the final two laps after leading a race-high 83 laps.

Peters padded his series point lead with a third-place finish, followed by Matt Crafton fourth and Parker Kligerman fifth. Cale Gale, Ron Hornaday Jr, Jason Leffler, Jason White and David Starr completed the Top-10.

“What a night,” said Buescher in Victory Lane. “Everyone on this team lives by the motto that we never give up, and tonight was a testament to that. We had to change the carburetor, but nobody gave up. We stayed with our plan and it worked perfectly. We had a great truck, and I knew we could get up there once we fixed the carburetor.”

Gunselman, Baldwin Announce Technical Alliance

JJ Yeley
Max Q Motorsports owner Larry Gunselman announced today that MQM and Tommy Baldwin Racing have formed a technical alliance. J.J. Yeley will drive the MQM No. 37 entry, effective immediately.

“Max Q has been trying to put itself in position get back into the Cup series and be competitive,” explained Gunselman. “Tommy and I got to talking and he explained where he wants his program to go. He would like to build his program like the Hendrick, RCR and Roush teams by selling cars and engineering to make their program better, and that is something that I been looking to do to get my program to the next level.”

TBR competed with two teams this season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The team, formed in 2009, also started a NASCAR Nationwide team this season, running a partial schedule.

“The only way we are going to get better is to be able to get our product out there more and have different people working on it,” said Baldwin. “I'm confident that with the group of guys Larry is assembling, along with J. J. behind the wheel, it will benefit both teams.”

Ron Howard Tabbed For Pace Car Duty at Indy

Two-time Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard will drive the Pace Car at the Crown Royal Presents the Curtiss Shaver 400 at the Brickyard powered by BigMachineRecords.com on Sunday, July 29, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway..

Howard has become an entertainment legend as a director, producer and actor. He has directed worldwide blockbusters including "A Beautiful Mind," "Angels & Demons," "Apollo 13," "Backdraft," "Cinderella Man," "Cocoon," "Parenthood," "Splash," "The Da Vinci Code" and "Willow.” He received Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture in 2001 for "A Beautiful Mind" and was nominated for Best Director in 2008 for "Frost/Nixon."

Howard will be making his first visit to the historic speedway, and will shadow four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon and his No. 24 Drive to End Hunger team.

Howard's upcoming epic-action drama, "Rush" has a racing theme. It stars Chris Hemsworth ("The Avengers") as the charismatic English Formula One star James Hunt and Daniel Brühl ("Inglourious Basterds") as Austrian Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized a contrast in style that extended to their private lives. "Rush" is currently in postproduction and will be released in 2013.

"It's a great honor to welcome a true legend, Ron Howard, to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the annual NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race," said Jeff Belskus, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation president and chief executive officer. "Ron has become immersed in motorsports' culture and history through the filming of 'Rush,' so he's an ideal person to pace the field for one of NASCAR's biggest races at 'The Greatest Race Course in the World.'"

The Pace Car for the 19th annual NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at IMS will be announced soon.

"I've been a longtime admirer of Jeff's work both on and off the track," Howard said. "Not only is he a stellar driver, but his commitment to ending older hunger in America shows his passion for helping others. I'm honored to drive the Pace Car at IMS, and I thank NASCAR for giving me this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Howard made his screen acting debut when he was 18 months old in the 1956 movie "Frontier Woman," which led to a role for Howard at the age of 2 in a stage production of "The Seven-Year Itch." He was introduced to America on a much grander scale at age 6 when in 1960 he was cast in the role of Opie Taylor on "The Andy Griffith Show," which led to major motion-picture appearances in the "The Music Man" in 1962 and "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" in 1963. His role in the 1973 George Lucas film, "American Graffiti," led him to the leading role of Richie Cunningham in the hit television sitcom "Happy Days" from 1974-84.

Woods Return To Original Colors at Brickyard

Mention the words “candy apple red” to a race fan and the next thing that comes to mind is the Wood Brothers No. 21 Ford.

Bayne's candy apple red No. 21 Ford
The connection between car and color became so embedded in NASCAR’s group mentality over the years that even now, long after the team switched to a metal-flake red in 1971, most people still refer to the red on the Wood’s Ford Fusion as candy apple.

When Trevor Bayne pulls the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion onto the Indianapolis Motor Speedway next week, the Wood Brothers’ car will return to its original, iconic colors. The car will outfitted in the throwback colors to honor long-time crew chief and engine builder Leonard Wood and his election into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Wood’s picture appears on the hood of the car, along with the Hall of Fame logo.
Leonard, who still works with the family team, said that every time he walks by the car it catches his eye.
“It’s beautiful, really nice looking,” he said.
Being honored at the Brickyard has special meaning for the man many consider one of the smartest ever to walk through the gate of a NASCAR garage. At the 1965 Indianapolis 500, Wood and his family-based pit crew worked for Jim Clark, helping and Ford to their first win in open wheel racing’s premier event.
Eddie Wood, current co-owner of Wood Brothers Racing, said he has been fascinated with candy apple red -- based on the red caramelized sugar coating found on candied apples -- since he first saw it on his family’s race car as a boy.
“I was 11 years old then, about the age when I really started noticing a lot of the details of the race cars and how they were painted. I remember it well,” he said, adding that putting time, planning and detail into a paint scheme wasn’t as common in the early days of the sport as it is today.
It wasn’t just the Woods who had colorful cars in 1963. Ned Jarrett’s cars were painted candy blue, while Fireball Roberts’ cars were candy lavender. Tiny Lund drove a car painted candy tangerine and Fred Lorenzen’s Holman-Moody Ford was pearl white, another shade in the candy family. Several drivers, including Hall of Famers Jarrett and Glen Wood (brother of Leonard), ended their driving careers in cars painted in their respective candy colors.
The original candy apple No. 21
Wood, a serious student of the history of the sport, has long wondered about the origins of the candy colored paint schemes. To find out, he went straight to the source. He discovered contact information for former Director of Ford Racing Jacque Passino in his mother’s Christmas card list, picked up the phone, and gave him a call. Passino, now 91, answered on the first ring and was ready to talk.
“He said he was having trouble following his cars around the race track, because so many of them looked alike,” Wood said. “So he had them painted candy colors.”
Passino also told Wood that he worked with famed car customizer George Barris, who had done work for Ford on the paint schemes.
“I was delighted to get to talk to Mr. Passino and get the story from him,” Wood said. “It’s been a mystery to me for a long time.”
The original candy apple paint scheme was run in the series now known as Sprint Cup by four drivers; Marvin Panch, Dan Gurney, Dave MacDonald, and Glen Wood, who ran his final Cup race at Starkey, Va., with that color. Sonny Hutchins and Donnie Allison also drove a Wood Brothers Modified 1937 Ford Coupe painted candy apple red.
The Woods ran that paint scheme until the end of the 1966 season, then began painting their cars white on the bottom. They kept the candy apple red on top through the driving tenures of Curtis Turner and Cale Yarborough. In the days before decals and wraps, the Woods painted their numbers white, with the first version of the candy apple car featuring an orange border around the number. Leonard Wood didn’t like that particular look, so the border was changed to black for a time. Around 1964, a gold border was added.
Back in the day, painter Ophus Agnew applied the candy apple color to the Woods’ Fords. The latest paint job is the work of Mike “Andretti” Smith. Eddie Wood, who has done some painting himself in the past, said Smith nailed the paint job, which can be a difficult one.
“You never know how it’s going to come out,” he said. “It can be too dark or too light or have streaks, but it came out just perfect.”

Homestead Latest To Revert To Friday Qualifying

Qualifying for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway has been moved to Friday, November 16. Gatorade Pole Qualifying is now set for 6:10 p.m. Friday during Ford Championship Weekend. It was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

Qualifying returns to the more traditional Friday and rounds-out that day’s activities. Friday’s NASCAR on-track schedule now includes: Nationwide Series practice (10:00 a.m.), Camping World Truck Series final practice (11:00), NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Gatorade Pole qualifying (6:10 p.m.), and the Camping World Truck Series Ford EcoBoost 200 (8:00 p.m.). The change in days also means fans at the track Saturday will be able to watch two separate Sprint Cup practices in the same afternoon – one starting at 1:00 and another at 3:00.

“This is great news for our fans attending the races,” said Homestead-Miami Speedway President Matthew Becherer. “On Friday, fans can watch the Sprint Cup Series Ford EcoBoost 400 qualifying, followed minutes later by the Camping World Truck Series championship race – all at the most affordable prices of the weekend. Then, Saturday, they can watch the final Sprint Cup Series practices of the year, followed by the Nationwide Series championship race.”

In terms of competition, it allows for greater consistency from track to track for Sprint Cup Series teams and provides the opportunity to focus on qualifying separate from race set ups for the cars.

McCollum: " Taxpayer-funded Race Cars... More Important Than Deficit Reduction"

Rep. McCollum is displeased
Minnesota Congresswoman Betty McCollum has commented on yesterday’s vote to defeat an amendment authored by she and Georgia Republican Jack Kingston that would have prohibited the United States military from sponsoring NASCAR teams or events.

“This vote was an important test for Republicans and Democrats as to whether they have the stomach to cut wasteful Pentagon spending at a time when Washington is facing trillion dollar deficits.," said McCollum in a written media release. "Unfortunately, a majority decided taxpayer-funded race cars and bass fishing were more important than deficit reduction.

"The good news is a broad bipartisan group of 202 conservatives, moderates, and progressives came together for the good of our children’s fiscal future," said McCollum. "My colleague, Rep. Jack Kingston, has been a terrific partner on this issue, and I think together we’ve demonstrated that first and foremost we are legislators working for the best interest of the American people.”
