Dover Presents Golden Opportunity For Johnson

Happily headed for Dover
For Jimmie Johnson, it’s all hands on deck, steady as she goes.

Back-to-back runner-up finishes to start the 2012 Chase at Chicagoland and New Hampshire have pushed the five-time Sprint Cup Series champion back to the top of the heap. Johnson is a single point ahead of Chicagoland winner Brad Keselowski entering Sunday’s AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway, and just seven points ahead of New Hampshire winner Denny Hamlin.

Hamlin was couple of missteps away from denying Johnson his fifth NASCAR Sprint Cup title in 2010, and while the two appear ready to battle for the crown once again, the script is slightly different this time.

Johnson’s run to a fifth series championship came after a crippling a 25th-place finish in the Chase opener at NHMS, but that deficit didn’t last long. Just two races later, following a victory and a runner-up finish, Johnson was the point leader. He then reeled four consecutive Top-10 showings to put himself solidly in title contention.

While Hamlin called his shot by predicting last week’s New Hampshire win, Johnson is unlikely to make any such bold predictions about this Sunday’s race at the Monster Mile. His record there, however, could easily inspire him to do so.

Johnson led 289 of 400 laps in June’s FedEx 400 at Dover, posting a record-matching seventh victory at the one-mile, concrete oval. He now shares that mark with seven-time Dover winners Richard Petty and Bobby Allison; both of whom just happen to be NASCAR Hall of Famers. Dover is the most prolific track on the circuit for Johnson, a driver who is used to winning, and winning often.

Johnson won the AAA 400 in both 2009 and 2010, en route to his fourth and fifth championships. He has now won four of the last seven Dover races -- including a season sweep in 2009 – and his Dover Driver Rating of 120.6 is a full 10 points higher than that of his nearest competitor.

He has run a whopping 5,170 laps in the Top 15 – 86.1% of all laps run in the last 21 “Monster Mile” starts. In the last eight races, Johnson has led an amazing 54% of the laps contested; 1,719 of 3,200.

All that math adds up to a golden opportunity for Johnson and his Lowe’s Chevrolet team to distance themselves from the competition. Both Keselowski and Hamlin readily admits that Dover does not rank near the top of the “favorite tracks” list. In fact, Hamlin admitted today that he’d be happy with a Top-10 finish Sunday, and “ecstatic” with a Top-5.

Opportunity clearly knocks for Jimmie Johnson this weekend. We’ll see if he and his team are able to respond.

NASCAR Releases 2013 Sprint Cup Schedule

NASCAR has announced the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule for the 2013 season.

New models of Chevrolet’s SS, Ford’s Fusion and Toyota’s Camry will make their official entrance into NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition on Feb. 16 with the preseason non-points Shootout at Daytona International Speedway. Qualifying for the “Great American Race” will take place on Feb. 17, followed by the season-opening 55th running of the Daytona 500 on Feb. 24.

“The new NASCAR Sprint Cup cars for next season have dominated fan conversation for more than a year, and the time is approaching to unleash them on the race track,” said Brian France, NASCAR chairman and CEO. “Next year’s schedule again will offer a strong mix of challenges for our talented drivers, and we believe fans will continue to enjoy what they’ve come to expect – the most exciting and competitive racing in the world.”

The 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule, marking the 65th season for NASCAR’s premier series, will have a familiar feel, opening with the Daytona 500 before moving west to Phoenix International Raceway (March 3) and Las Vegas Motor Speedway (March 10) for races Nos. 2 and 3. For the third consecutive season, NASCAR’s playoffs – the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup – will start at Chicagoland Speedway, near one of the country’s biggest markets. The Chase will conclude with the season finale on Nov. 17 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
With Kansas Speedway’s repave project now complete, next season’s Talladega Super-speedway autumn event will return to its traditional spot on the calendar. Talladega’s 2013 Chase race, No. 6 during the 10-race stretch, will run Oct. 20. Kansas will host its 2013 Chase event on Oct. 6.

IT'S OFFICIAL: Kurt Busch To Furniture Row Racing

Kurt Busch will race for Furniture Row Racing next season replacing Regan Smith.

“Though we have made strides as a resourceful single-car Sprint Cup team, we are not where we want to be, which led us to the difficult decision of making a driver change as we move forward,” said Furniture Row Racing's general manager Joe Garone. “Kurt’s exceptional driving talent has the capacity to take a team to another level. We look forward to having Kurt join our Denver-based organization and feel his racing experience will play an important role as we plan ahead to 2013.”

Garone also spoke highly of current driver Regan Smith, saying, “As our team driver the past four years, Regan has represented Furniture Row Racing with both class and competitiveness. His win at Darlington in 2011 – the first for Furniture Row Racing – will be a memory forever etched in our organization’s history. He is a friend, and will always be a friend of Furniture Row Racing. We wish him all the best.”

Busch, a 34 year-old native of Las Vegas, has been a full time driver in the Sprint Cup Series since 2001. He has 427 Cup starts and has scored 24 wins, 89 Top-5 and 171 Top-10 finishes, along with 15 poles. He has qualified for the Chase six times in nine years and won the championship in the inaugural Chase season of 2004, in only third full season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

“Furniture Row Racing has the commitment, talent and resources to compete at a high level in the Sprint Cup Series,” said Busch. "I have watched with admiration on how this team has grown over the years and that is why I am excited about the opportunity as I eagerly look forward to a new chapter in my racing career."

Busch currently drives  currently races for James Finch’s Phoenix Racing, ranking 25th in championship points with one Top-5 and Two Top-10 finishes in 28 starts. Finch announced recently that he may be forced to close the team’s doors at season’s end if additional sponsorship cannot be found.
Contract details have not been released.

Wauters Motorsports Tabs Ryan Reed For Las Vegas

Ryan Reed will make his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut Saturday for Wauters Motorsports, driving the No. 5 Racehard.com/RyansMission.org Ford F150 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Reed has raced as a developmental driver for Venturini Motorsports on the ARCA Series this season, and will make his first start on the 1.5-mile Las Vegas track.  The Bakersfield, Calif. native has posted one Top-5 and five Top-10 finishes in 13 ARCA starts, and  scored a career-best fifth place finish at Chicagoland Speedway.
The 19-year old Reed was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in February of 2011, and was told by doctors that his racing days were over. He quickly shifted his focus, poured his energy into managing his health and educating himself on the disease. He has now returned to the sport, and uses his racing platform and personal story to inspire others living with T1D to continue living life to its fullest. He founded Ryan’s Mission (www.RyansMission.org) to help spread that message.
Reed’s efforts have made him a National Celebrity Advocate of JDRF, the world’s largest charitable funder of T1D research. Today, he is only one of three people in the world to compete at the highest professional levels of the sport with T1D.
“It’s pretty exciting to be making my first start in a NASCAR series,” said Reed. “Since I was a little kid, I’ve always thought about what it would be like to drive a Truck, Nationwide or Cup car. So to be finally doing it is really cool. I think it gives us a head start on next year, whatever we end up doing. Hopefully, it will be back in one of these three series.
“Everyone knows that Richie (Wauters) is one of the best in the business, so to be driving one of his trucks is an honor. We’ve been having success racing a Ford on the ARCA side, so the synergy is there. Richie’s truck being a Ford gives us a really big advantage.
Team owner Wauters returns to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the site of his first victory as a crew chief with driver Shane Hmiel in 2004.
“Las Vegas is a special track for me,” he said. “Any place where you have your first victory will always stand out, anytime you race there. We are really looking forward to having Ryan race with the team. He’s had success with Venturini’s ARCA team this year at the mile and a half tracks, so once we get him used to a race truck, I’m sure we’ll have a good result.
“Las Vegas is a fast track and I’ve had most of my successes on mile-and-a-half tracks, so I think that is going to be good,” Reed said. “I think it plays into my hands. I’ve spent some time in iRacing learning the track. It’s not like jumping in a truck and going around Vegas, but it will help me get some tips on where the line is and how big the track is. I’m just really excited to go out and see what we can do. I think it is a great combo.”
Racehard.com will serve as the joint sponsor for the event, along with RyansMission.org. RaceHard.com outfits serious racers, professional pit crews and diehard fans from head to toe with a huge selection of pit crew apparel, pit equipment and auto racing safety equipment.

Darlington Announces 2013 Race Dates

Darlington Raceway has announced that the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series will return to the track Too Tough to Tame on Mother’s Day weekend, May 10-11, 2013.

The 2013 Sprint Cup Series Bojangles’ Southern 500 will mark the 64th consecutive year of NASCAR racing at the Lady in Black, dating back to 1950.

“We’re excited the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series will be returning to Darlington Raceway for our traditional Mother’s Day weekend in 2013,” track President Chris Browning said. “Darlington Raceway always puts on some of the most exciting racing in NASCAR and we look forward to hosting another great race weekend this May.”

Jimmie Johnson won the 2012 Bojangles’ Southern 500 in a thrilling late-race duel with defending Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart, giving Johnson his third career Cup win at Darlington. His victory made history, giving team owner Rick Hendrick his 200th career Sprint Cup win.

Joey Logano won the Nationwide Series race at Darlington last season for his first victory at the trackToo Tough to Tame.

Tickets for 2013 events will go on sale to the public beginning Friday, Nov. 16, with prices as low as $35 for the Bojangles’ Southern 500. Kids 12 and under are free in general admission on Friday and half-price for any reserved seat on either event day.

Enfinger Tabbed To Drive For Keselowski in Vegas

Grant Enfinger to BKR's No. 29 RAM
Brad Keselowski Racing has named Grant Enfinger to drive its Reese Towpower-sponsored No. 29 RAM in this weekend’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Smith’s 350 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Enfinger was recently hired by BKR to drive the No. 29 Reese Towpower RAM at Las Vegas after Ryan Blaney, who earned the team its first win last weekend, was tabbed to drive Penske Racing’s No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge in NASCAR Nationwide Series competition at Dover, Delaware that same day. Enfinger is a regular in the ARCA series and has a career-best  Camping World Truck Series finish of 12th at both Talladega and Daytona.

Reese Towpower returns as major sponsor for the first time since August 22 at Bristol Motor Speedway, when the truck was driven by Brad Keselowski himself.  The race marks their final appeareance of the 2012 campaign, with the balance of the schedule split among the team’s other sponsors, Cooper Standard and Draw-Tite.

Putting A Wrap On Week Two Of The Chase

Right where he wants to be
Anyone who believes the old addage, “Always a bridesmaid, never a bride” hasn’t been watching Jimmie Johnson lately.

A pair of runner-up finishes at Chicagoland and New Hampshire Motor Speedway has pushed the five-time Sprint Cup Series champion into familiar territory; the top of the 2012 championship standings. Johnson overcame a mid-pack qualifying effort to finish second behind winner Denny Hamlin Sunday, just enough to edge him ahead of Keselowski in the championship standings. With eight races remaining, Johnson totals 2,096 points to Keselowski’s 2,095. Hamlin is third, another six points back.

“We were best in class today and did a great job,” said Johnson, with a respectful nod toward Hamlin’s dominant Toyota. “We beat our average (finish) here and it’s very important and helpful in the Chase. Everybody is racing for position. Everybody is racing for wins and the points fall where they fall.”

Next up for Johnson is the Monster Mile at Dover, a track his Lowe’s Chevrolet team has dominated in recent seasons. In 21 career starts there, Johnson has seven wins, 10 Top-5 and 15 Top-10 finishes, with an average finish of 8.8. “(It’s) a place I love,” admitted Johnson. “Hopefully we have a good, smart day and get the finish we hope to have.”

In past seasons, Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus have relied on similarly fast starts to the Chase, racking-up Top-3 finishes in the first half of the playoff schedule to separate themselves from the bulk of the field. It appears that strategy is being employed with equal success again this season.

…One can only wonder how dominant Hamlin might have been Sunday, had it not been for a bizarre qualifying miscue that saw his team inflate his tires to race-day air pressures, rather than qualifying pressures. Despite starting 32nd Sunday, the FedEx Toyota needed just 93 laps to claim the lead. Hamlin eventually led 193 of the 300 laps, including 193 of the final 206.

Edwards in disarray
...If Ford Motor Company is going to contend for the 2012 Sprint Cup Series championship, they need to get their flat-track program figured out, in a hurry. The Blue Oval was a non-entity at New Hampshire, with Matt Kenseth’s lukewarm, 14th-place finish the best of the day. Roush Fenway Racing teammates Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards were 18th and 19th, respectively, the only other Fords in the Top-10. While the FR9 powerplant gives Ford an edge at intermediate and restrictor-plate venues, they continue to lag far behind on shorter, flatter tracks. Martinsville and Phoenix lie ominously on the horizon, and FoMoCo engineers have little time to shore up their sagging fortunes.

…Speaking of Edwards, crew chief Bob Osborne’s decision to step down in mid-July has done nothing to improve the performance of the Aflac Ford team. Edwards started fifth Sunday, but plummeted almost immediately from the Top-10. He has 20th at the halfway mark and finished 19th at the drop of the checkered flag. Edwards’ best finish in the last five weeks was a 17th at Richmond, and the No. 99 team is quite clearly in disarray.

…Sprint Cup Series team are now officially worried about the lack of body panels for the new, 2013 cars that will debut at the Daytona 500 in February. NASCAR has given final approval to the new, more stock appearing 2013 bodies, but neither Ford, Chevrolet nor Toyota have begun stamping out needed panels for distribution to teams. NASCAR has set an exhaustive schedule of tests for the new 2013 package, beginning Oct. 3 at Talladega and continuing Oct. 9/10 at Texas, Oct. 24/25 at Phoenix and Nov. 6/7 at Charlotte. All those tests are considered critical for teams and Goodyear tire engineers alike. Fiberglass mockups will almost certainly be used in those tests, even though weight differences between fiberglass and steel make the results less useful.

Headed to Furniture Row?
…Kyle Busch’s season – and Busch himself – went further south Sunday, when engine problems once again ruined a solid early performance at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. After reporting a loss of power to crew chief Dave Rogers, Busch displayed his frustration with a long and disappointing 2012 campaign when asked to check his gauges for possible temperature or oil pressure issues.
"They're fine,” snapped Busch. “I would tell you if there was something wrong. I'm not stupid.”
Don’t be surprised to see major changes on the No. 18 M&M’s team during the offseason.
…Despite repeated statements of satisfaction with current driver Regan Smith, it appears that Furniture Row Racing is gearing up for a major 2012 retooling, after all.
Smith confirmed Friday that he is unlikely to return next season, and sources say the seat in the No. 78 Chevrolet is Kurt Busch’s for the asking. FRR general manager Joe Garone first expressed interest in Busch months ago, while insisting that he was merely investigating options for a possible second entry. Busch admitted that talks have taken place with Furniture Row, saying, “There (are) a handful of contracts sitting on my desk and it's just a matter of going through some detail with each of the teams."
Make no mistake about it, Busch is a prohibitive favorite to replace Smith in 2013.
…Brian Vickers bolstered his case for a full-time NASCAR ride yet again Sunday, wheeling Michael Waltrip Racing’s No. 55 Toyota to a ninth-place finish. In seven starts this season, Vickers has now claimed three Top-5 and four Top-10 finishes, and looks nothing like the desperate, hair-triggered driver who feuded with both Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth a year ago, in the final weeks of his ride with the lame-duck Red Bull Racing team.
Vickers’ 2012 efforts have not gone unnoticed. The North Carolina native is believed to be headed for a full-time Nationwide Series ride with Joe Gibbs Racing next season, and could possibly retain his part-time Sprint Cup job at MWR, as well. After sitting out much of the 2010 season due to potentially career-threatening health issues, Vickers is NASCAR’s “Comeback Kid” of 2012.
Jeff Gordon’s championship plight came into full focus Sunday, when his Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet started on the pole at New Hampshire and ran well all day before finishing third behind Hamlin and Johnson. That solid showing gained Gordon exactly two points in the standings, however, and he remains a distant 12th in the title chase.
“We are going to have to win a lot… and keep those top results going like we got today,” admitted Gordon afterward. “And we are going to need some help. This is the first step in the process and this is definitely what we needed.”
