Baldwin Salutes Late Father With Number Change

Tommy Baldwin is reclaiming part of his family history. 

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series owner announced today that he will change the number of his Dave Blaney-driven Chevrolet SS this season, running the No. 7 made famous by his late father in NASCAR Modified tour competition. 

Tom Baldwin, Sr., who was a popular NASCAR Modified driver, and sported the number 7NY throughout his career. Baldwin died in a multi-car crash on Lap 10 of a 150-lap event at the Thompson (CT) Speedway on August 19, 2004. Tommy Baldwin, Jr. got his start in the sport working on his father's cars, and eventually became one of NASCAR’s top crew chiefs.

 

He worked atop the pit box for Junie Donlavy. Ultra Motorsports, Bill Davis Racing, Evernham Motorsports and other, winning the 2002 Daytona 500 with driver Ward Burton at Bill Davis Racing. He founded his own team, Tommy Baldwin Racing, in 2009.

"It is a very special moment today to announce the number 7 on our Chevrolet SS,” said Baldwin. “The number has been in the Baldwin family for a long time and it is going to be pretty special to carry on that legacy in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series."  

Blaney will drive the No. 7 entry beginning with the season-opening Daytona 500. The number was previously run by Robby Gordon Motorsports, but Gordon is not expected to field a Sprint Cup entry in 2013.
