JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner Tad Geschickter told Sirius XM NASCAR Radio’s Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody today that his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team will likely maintain its current alliances with Michael Waltrip Racing and Toyota in 2012.
“We are looking at a number of different options that will enable us to continue to share notes and technical support with Michael Waltrip,” he said, adding that the partnership “has definitely helped us be a better team. As it looks today, we are going to assert some independence. But we continue to work every week with Michael to figure out what (the relationship) is going to look like.”
Geshickter confirmed that JTG Daugherty will no longer operate out of the MWR shops in Cornelius, NC, in 2012, instead moving back to their its own facility in Harrisburg. “That’s definitely the plan,” he said. “They’ve obviously got a lot they’re trying to get their arms around, right now, and we own a building full of equipment that we raced out of for a lot of years. We’ve been paying the mortgage on that building and renting space at MWR, too. That was one area where we could put more money into the race car next year, and it makes total sense for us to do that. I think we know enough about how to interact with MWR now that the physical location isn’t as important as it once was.”
He also confirmed that while not complete, talks designed to return JTG Daugherty to the Toyota camp in 2012 are close to bearing fruit. “That’s the biggest thing,” he said. “Without manufacturer support, you’re dead in the water, so we’ve been working diligently with Toyota to understand the nature of our relationship with them. I’m not the type of person who announces anything before it’s signed, but we’ve certainly gone well downfield with those folks in defining what the next several years will look like for us in the Toyota camp. We’re excited about that, and hopefully there will be an announcement coming soon.”
Geschickter said that while he has enjoyed fielding Toyota Camrys the last few years, he also understands his place in the manufacturer’s competitive hierarchy. “Obviously, there’s a pecking order with every manufacturer,” he said. “Michael Waltrip Racing is ahead of JTG Daugherty Racing in the Toyota pecking order, as well they should be. They helped bring Toyota into the sport and they’re running better and better all the time. Toyota has been a great partner through all this, though, and I’m very happy with where we’re at.”
He admitted having conversations with other manufacturers, as well, falling back on some longstanding friendships. “We ran the NASCAR Nationwide Series for 14 years before moving to Cup,” he recalled. “We were a GM team for eight years and a Ford team for five or six. The longer you’re in the sport, the more relationship you have, and we certainly know everyone in those camps. But at the end of the day, you want your manufacturer alliance to directly address the areas you need to be better in, and in that regard, I’m a big fan of the Toyota business model.”
While calling an alliance with a team like MWR “imperative” for a small operation like JTG Daugherty Racing, Geschickter said there are advantages to being small, as well. “I’ve always been a smaller operator, and the infrastructure of some of these big teams makes them a little less nimble,” he said. “When you have your own team, you can make a change without having to go through quite so many cars to fix something.” Overall, however, he said there is no doubt that that bigger is better. “When you only have two and a half hours (of practice) to dial a car in, having every car measure the same so people can compare notes makes you faster.”
Geschickter said an official announcement of next year’s manufacturer and driver lineup will likely come at Talladega in two weeks, but said he expects Bobby Labonte to return to the #47 next season. “Bobby and I shook hands, which is all we’ve ever needed to do,” he said. “Short of signing a contract, we’re feeling pretty good about getting that done.”
Geschickter also revealed plans to expand the team in the foreseeable future, saying, “We’re definitely looking to become a multi-car team in 2013.”
Why would JTG Daugherty stay with Michael Waltrip Racing when they are terrible? Why would you continue with another year of the same results? It's clear this team has given up with such a stupid decision and is content to run with the Front Row Motorsports of the world. Great decision Tad, you can hang out back with Tommy Baldwin Racing and Nemco Motorsports and watch the race.
ReplyDeleteAll JTG Daugherty is anyway is the R&D side of Michael Waltrip Racing. They just ride around all day in back anyway. They must be doing a pretty bad job in the first place because Waltrip's team sucks and isn't getting any better. Only one I seeing being hurt by this is Bobby Labonte who will have another bad year in 2012 R&D racing.
ReplyDelete“Obviously, there’s a pecking order with every manufacturer,” Geschickter said. That's just funny! Nothing like admitting in print that your team isn't going to be as good as others. Makes me wonder about Labonte's decision in choosing to stay with this train wreck. I think the real headline should read: Bobby Labonte has given up
ReplyDeleteJust woke up for work to hear this nonsense! Never in a million years believed that I would cheer for someone other than Bobby Labonte. I can't continues to follow someone who keeps making stupid career decisions. This team is bad and will continue to be bad in the future. Jeez!
ReplyDeletei think you guys have already written what i'm thinking. this is one of the most dumb decisions i've heard. if you want to stay with toyota then why not at the very least work with a good team like joe gibbs racing?
ReplyDeleteIt makes very little sense to me as to why Bobby Labonte would continue to stay with a team who doesn't have any upside. I have spent the past few years trying to understand the logic of Bobby who continues to stay with bad teams. This decision by Tad is silly when they had a chance to work an alliance with RCR and JGR. I respect Bobby but I'm getting off this ride. I have continued to hang in there hoping that something good would soon happen. This decision proves that nothing good is coming and I can't watch another year of this. I would rather Bobby retire than continue on the DW path of just filling a seat at the end of his career. TRD has already said they will be making engines for 6 teams in 2012, the 3 cars of JGR and the 3 cars of MWR. Looks like JTG Daugherty is happy with the pecking order at the back of the field. Tad, you should be ashamed of yourself!
ReplyDeleteWow what a dumb decision by Tad & Brad. Nothing like telling your fans that you have given up on becoming successful and are content on being a back marker. I have been a Bobby Labonte fan for as long as I have been a fan of Nascar, started in 1991. I think today is the single worst day as a fan that I can remember. Realizing that your favorite driver is about to resign with a bad team again who isn't going to improve because of stupid decisions. I will never understand why you would go back with MWR, it's like a consolation prize. My opinion is Bobby's career will be remembered more for going from one bad team to another rather than the championships and on track achievements. You have to figure this will ruin any chance of Bobby being taken serious by good teams and he isn't getting any younger. I give Elliott Sadler so much credit for moving down to the Nationwide Series and getting a competitive ride compared to just hanging out in the Sprint Cup Series without any real chance of anything, Bobby should have done the same. It's not like he's in it for the money anymore, being competitive should have been the only thing that matters. I think this decision will cost Bobby a lot of fans that have stuck in there hoping for something good to happen.
ReplyDeleteI hate hearing this, totally lost any hope that Labonte will ever have any success again. 2 bad teams together doesn't create a winning formula. Been a Bobby fan forever, time for me to pick a new driver. It's been long enough dealing with these horrible teams.
ReplyDeletePoor Bobby, if Jimmie Johnson or Dale Earnhardt Jr. had to drive for this team they would kill themselves!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe all the bad karma. Abondoning drivers and teams when they take a different road. And nobody with the balls to sign their names to their defeatist back stabbing comments. If you're a fan support your team. If you think they can't do it they don't need your support. And stop hiding behind anonymous
ReplyDeleteKelly in Manitoba
Well how long can you continue to be supportive when the results continue to be the same year after year and the proof is there that they are not getting any better? I myself am not a Bobby fan but I totally agree with what they are saying Kelly. You can be a fan and not agree with the direction they are taking. Last I checked it's America. You can't honestly believe that this decision is going to make this team any better? If you do then you are not being honest or you don't have a clue about the sport. Maybe you might want to check on what TRD (Toyota) is saying about only supporting 6 teams next year: #11 Hamlin, #18 Busch, #20 Logano, #00 Reutimann, #56 Truex, and Clint Bowyer. So be honest and say that this team and Bobby's season will continue to be 20th place finishes to 30th place finishes. How can anyone believe that's not worth taking junk about? Time people take the blinders off, this is just another bad move.
ReplyDeleteJohn in New England
P.S. Kelly, I'm not trying to start something with you but they have the right to say and believe what they want as you do. Posting a name isn't going to change the opinion or give you any idea who they are anyway. Kelly in Manitoba doesn't mean anything to me or anyone and I'm sure the fact that I'm John in New England doesn't mean anything to anyone. Grow up and stop judging people's opinion when you don't agree. Who the hell are you?
Nice post, John. I am a Bobby fan and I think this is a big mistake. I read the TRD deal with the engines and this will do nothing more than get Bobby into a car that will make the races and nothing else in my opinion. A year from now we will be sitting in the same exact position we are now, that's nothing to look forward to. I'm afraid that I agree with the majority of post on here, next year is going to be another bad year in my opinion and I'm not trying to upset anyone. This is not a positive move by most people inside the Bobby Labonte fan base, just read some of the comments on different sites and you'll see this isn't a good move by most. Granted it not our money, but I have been a fan of Bobby's forever and this decision will keep me from 4 races next year that I always go to.
ReplyDeleteDan from Virginia...lol!
This is a bad decision in my opinion. Bobby will suffer for it. That is all!
ReplyDeleteHere's a question for all of you unhappy with JTG's decision to remain with Waltrip and Toyota. What better option was there that Tad Geschickter should have gone with? And please don't say Hendrick or Gibbs or Roush, because those were not on the list of options.
ReplyDeleteposted on Jayski: JTG Daugherty Racing is looking at potential alliances with Richard Childress Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing for the 2012 Sprint Cup season, co-owner Brad Daugherty said Tuesday. Daugherty, who is also an analyst for ESPN's NASCAR coverage, said the goal for the operation is to run the team from its own shop in Harrisburg, N.C. For the past three seasons, the team has been working from MWR's shop in Cornelius, N.C. Daugherty said the move has nothing to do with MWR looking to finalize a deal for current RCR driver Clint Bowyer in a third car. He also said reports that the organization is looking to form an alliance with Richard Petty Motorsports are not true. "We have an offer from MWR and we are evaluating that alliance opportunity along with a few others,'' said Daugherty. "I want to be clear it is JTG Daugherty Racing's desire to race out of our own shop. We are looking to run faster and smarter and we need a big team alliance to do so. MWR has been a good partner and we appreciate their input into our race team. One again, though, where we end up is a decision (co-owners) Tad (Geschickter), Jodi (Geschickter) and I will make.'' Daugherty said the team plans to keep its relationship with 2000 Sprint Cup champion Bobby Labonte and has not ruled out maintaining a relationship with Toyota. MWR and JGR field Toyotas, while RCR fields Chevrolets.(ESPN)(9-28-2011)
ReplyDeleteHi Dave, my opinion is that RCR was the best option and JGR was the second based on what was written on Jayski(ESPN). I'm not big on MWR because I have never seen any consistent results that make me consider them one of the top teams at this level. RCR has proven themselves over the years and I believe they would have better helped JTG.
Shawn from Ohio
If those were truly better options, Shawn, why would a smart businessman like Tad not have gone with them?
ReplyDeleteJust my opinion Dave, but do you think that this now makes this team a contender in 2012? Will Bobby run in the top 15 consistently? I say RCR because look at what they did for Paul Menard. How many times did you see Menard mixing it up at the front? He as had a great season! RCR did that and I don't believe MWR could have.
ReplyDeleteMy point being that good equipment makes all the difference!
ReplyDeleteFor those of you that have ranted, I would ask that you please re-read the two comments made by Mr. Moody. He asked two questions. I feel Mr. Moody was trying to convey something, using his knowledge and exeperience, when he asked them.
ReplyDeleteGive the questions some thought and see what you think he may have been trying to help you understand.
I don't mean any disrespect to the last person who posted, but all I have seen since 2006 is people seeing things that don't exist because that is what their heart wants to see. I truly do hope that there is some unknown that we don't know about. I have not seen any positives since the JGR days. Every year every team Bobby has been associated with comes out and says all these things about the big and great things happening for next year and then the media repeats it as the gospel only to end up with the same results on the track. Hopefully next year will be great, but I don't believe it will. I believe you will see the same faces at the front and the same faces in the back talking about the great things happening for the next season. We will get 'em next week and being happy running mid field just doesn't cut it anymore. So I do hope this time will be different than all the other times (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011).
ReplyDeleteMy point is that Tad almost certainly took the best deal offered to him. Thus, the fact that he is not with RCR next year means they either did not make him an offer, or their offer not as good as that of MWR and Toyota. Same goes for JGR, Roush and anyone else you can name. Take a minute and THINK about it. If there was a better option, Tad would certainly take it.
ReplyDeleteThanx for your opinion John. If you can't sign your name to your comment you could be a troll looking to stir things up. I'm a newer fan and still learning. I'm sure Tad knows more about running a Nascar team than I ever will.
ReplyDeleteInstead of critisizing his decision maybe people should ask why. Less money on rent could mean more money on the car. Or small cutbacks could mean a better chance of surviving the next fiscal year. We hope for the best of our drivers and teams but trashing there decisions isn't very supportive. Question there train of thought. We obviously don't have all the info.
I follow many drivers but Smoke is my lead driver. The entire SHR teams had problems in Dover. But I'm not trashing Darian's pit calls. I think Tad Jody and Brad know best on how to go forward with there team. I'm always amazed how people are so quick to complain and indifferent to complimentary actions.

This was posted at Jayski a few days ago ~ TRD will have the capacity to build six sets of Sprint Cup Series engines next season. JGR's trio of Camrys driven by Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano accounts for three sets and Michael Waltrip Racing's Martin Truex, Jr. and David Reutimann account for two more. That leaves one engine set to be allotted, without accounting for MWR's expected third 2012 entry driven by Clint Bowyer.

Holly from Red Lion
If JTG and a few of the other smaller Toyota teams like Germain and Nemco got together and formed their own alliances plus Toyota's supposed across the board information sharing they may all be able to perform better.
ReplyDeleteLet's face it most of these teams will now be forced to run Triad Motors and Cars with the exception of Chassis and Bodies from MWR for JTG. Toyota is thinning the herd and I would assume Factory Support for lower tier teams will become limited soon.
On a side note any alliance with RPM makes the team partnering with RPM a Lower Tier team. With the MWR alliance they may have a better shot. RCR and ECRT have too large of a group of partners already and performance there is beginning to suffer. I think a JGR alliance would be too expensive without significant results for most lower tier teams.
Triad Motors...UGH :(
ReplyDeleteWhether you like Tad's decisions or not, which Tad stated nothing has been signed so nothing is in stone yet, we as fans have to trust that Tad is making the best decisions for the team with the resources available or offered to him.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the matter with you fair weather Bobby Labonte fans? Do you think Tad is purposely trying to do all he can to ruin this team? Do you think Tad or Bobby desires not to win? The answer is, of course not.
Has anyone not noticed the bad economy and that the dollars from sponsorship is hard to come by and that Tad created the first model of how to share sponsorship on a car successfully. Do you think he is going to do all that hard work to let the team go down the drain? The answer is no! Do you think it would be very expensive to go out and buy all new cars next year without significant help from that manufacturer? Yes!
JTG Daugherty has done more to cater to Bobby's fans than any team Bobby has been on including JGR. Facebook, Twitter, Race Day Chat, free race tickets, and even has invited some fans to join them up close and personal on race day. Who else does that for their fans?
Bobby, JTG D, and Reese Towpower worked together to find a bone marrow donor to save a young girls life and did.
Being a fan of Bobby Lanonte and JTG D is more than about winning every week. Beleive me, I want to see Bobby and JTG D be competitive week in and week out as much as anyone and do get frustrated at times myself. If you can't be a 100% dedicated fan through the good and the bad then go find another driver, and I will be smiling back at you when the top 10-15 runs and wins start coming again.
I will proudly sign my name,

What happened to if you cannot say anything nice then don't say anything at all? I'm with Mickey on this. I would love to see some of you actually try to do their job. It's easy to make their calls from behind a computer when it's not your money.
ReplyDeleteWe, as fans, have to either accept their calls or not. I am sure that they know what they are doing better than we do. I trust them to make the calls best for them and for the future of the team.
Sometimes change is good and sometimes it's bad. If you make too many changes, it would be like starting from scratch. Starting that much over would lose us the progress we've made. And they have made progress, whether some of you see that or not.
As far as them giving back to the fans, they have gone way above and beyond in that. They are a family at JTG-D. When you look at the list of Sprint Cup drivers on nascar.com only 7 drivers have free interactive chat rooms for the fans, 2 you have to buy fan memberships for, and the other 32 don't have a chat room, though a few do have forums, but forums usually seem controlled by robots. They have brought awareness to blood marrow donors, they visited a childrens' home for foster and underprivileged kids. They have given away several tickets to different race tracks. They have trivia contests to win autographed items. They give so much back to the fans and this is what they get in return? It doesn't seem fair to me They have done so many great things like this to help the community.
So either face the changes with pride or find someone else to follow. Hendrick seems to stay the most stable so you may want to look there. and as it is said by the muskateers "all for one and one for all." We have to take these changes together and they in return will provide us with what we want to see, good runs and wins, but it will take all of us working together to get there. So who's with me?!

Megan and Micky, love your dedication! I agree with most of what you guys say, but I think they have just as much right to say what they did. Stop trying to run the world, please! Just let these people see for themselves next year. Freedom of speech is the freedom to speak freely without censorship. That works both ways! Why is it that you both criticize others for their opinions? That's not fair! You both can give your honest opinion without pointing fingers! It's neither of your jobs to defend! I agree with Dave and believe that in the end more things will come out that reveal this to be a good decision, let's just hang in there and wait....
ReplyDeleteDallas in Chicago
Why it always okay to let them have their opinions, but I'm always criticized for giving mine because I choose to defend the team? I'm not allowed to 'point fingers' but you are? If it's free speech then let me have my free speech. I don't see the point in criticizing their every move even if I don't agree with it. There's nothing I can do about it. And just because we choose to defend and see things with a positive outlook that makes us trying to run the world? That doesn't make sense either. I don't even want to run the world. I just wish more people could see the good in things rather than the bad all the time. And as a fan, I only find it part of my duty to support the team in every way I can. Maybe that's wrong, but that's how I see it.

Sorry about all this! I find it embarrassing and it seems to happen, all the time...
ReplyDeleteI love how everyone Chimes in here about the decision being bad, and bashing bobby; got a question how many of you know what is actually going on? I have heard nothing but good things from Bobby about this team and progress so far. You don't just automaticly run good your first season with new team, car, owner, crew chief and so on.... You work on it and get better, that's exactly what will happen. I think it was the right call and the 47 will be better and better. Get the facts before you bash bobby Omg jtg. D. Just my two cents. I'm sure you guys could make a better decision, using the "facts" from Jayski and internet rumors.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a bad decision and I think the world of Bobby...just my opinion! I don't need Jayski or internet rumors to form an opinion just like you don't need to tell me I'm wrong for thinking what I think. I don't have a clue and neither do you...so let people give their opinions without bashing them. Your two cents isn't any better than anyone else. I respect that you think it was the right decision and I sure hope you are correct. I love how it's always the people who agree with decisions who always tell the other group what they should think. Me got my masters and me think I'm smart enough to form an opinion without any help ;)
ReplyDeleteSure thing buddy. I'll stick with what I said
ReplyDeleteOh and Megan Im right there with u! As u see I did the same and my opinion isn't worth much because the person after me has a masters lol. I'm right there with ya
ReplyDeleteI agree with the majority of you guys.
ReplyDeleteKen from NC
Dave....after the race at Kansas, were you able to talk with Tad? I bet, after watching those three "rocketships" from MWR finish where they did, yesterday, is he going to reconsider? I bet, right after the race, Tad beat-it over to Frankie Stoddard's hauler, as Frankie, Mike Bliss and and handfull of full time crew were able to finish above the #00, #47 and that #56 and only a couple of laps off-the-pace, probably on used tires, for a run or two, also!
ReplyDeleteHas anyone who commented noticed that if you count all of the teams who have started EVERY race this season, last place is David Gilliland and next-to-last is.....BLab and the #47 JTG/Daugherty car. Not an impressive fact, for sure.
I feel very sorry for the Bobby-fans who have supported him these past several years. Looks like Tad is going to keep this type of racing going, with another signing with.....MWR.
I cannot believe he would do this, as he should have stayed with Ford and he would be running FR-9's, instead of Triad engines, next season. It will only be....worse!
I'm not happy with them re-upping with MWR, but I agree with Dave Moody that there probably wasn't any better options. If RCR had made an offer for an alliance similar to MWR, but the 47 would get to run the (most likely defunct) 33 chassis' and engines, I'm sure Tad would've jumped on it. Just like if Bobby was offered a top ride he'd jump on it, but that apparently hasn't happened either.
ReplyDeleteJGR or Roush wouldn't necessarily be good alliances either, as Hall of Fame racing didn't fair too well running their r&d stuff. How happy were you when Bobby was there?
I haven't heard anything about Hendrick, SHR, EGR or Penske even being an option. Though Penske would be my preference of all of these teams, they're having an awesome season and, being only a 2 car team, their resources wouldn't be spread too thin, so we know Bobby would be getting good stuff. But that's a pipe dream at this point.
Just to play devil's advocate for those who are jumping off Bobby's bandwagon, I get it and so should the rest of you. Bobby isn't too far away from turning 50 years old, it's unlikely we'll see him in a cup victory lane again, especially running bottom of the barrell equipment. Bobby said himself that he was on his way over to sign with EGR a few yrs ago when the HoF offer came in, huge mistake. He probably wouldn't have contended for a championship, but he would have had opportunities to win races and that could have propelled him to an even better ride, because he'd have shown people he can still wheel a racecar. You have every right to complain, I get it.
To be honest I'd rather Bobby not drive the 47 next yr and instead get a top notch truck ride. He'll win races and then he could be the first driver to win a championship in all 3 series (that is assuming Carl doesn't win the cup this year).
Another bad week for MWR and JTG/Daugherty, Dave!
ReplyDeleteDid you see that even Bob Jenkins's #38, with JJ Yeley driving, was able to outrun all three of those MWR-rocketships, once again? This has been two weeks in-a-row, that sub-par teams have outrun all three cars from MWR.
I wonder if Tad was over talking with Bob Jenkins, to get something lined-up for next season, which would bring some better results.
Other than David Gilliland, the #47 is in a terrible-position this season.
Tad needs to talk with Ford!
Career suicide for Bobby....same results next year!
