Wallace Recovering After Post-Concert Assault

Wallace was left battered by the attack
NASCAR driver Mike Wallace was hospitalized Friday evening after being assaulted by three men following a concert in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Wallace, his wife Carla, daughter Lindsey and son-in-law Thomas Van Wingerden were leaving a performance by the country group Rascal Flats at PNC Amplitheatre when they were confronted by three assailants. The 57-year old Wallace was rendered unconscious in the attack, then kicked repeatedly in the face and head as he lay unresponsive on the ground.

Lindsay Wallace Van Wingerden attempted to shield her father from the attack and was kicked repeatedly, as well.

Their alleged attackers were apprehended by the Charlotte Mecklenberg Police Department after witnesses provided a description of their vehicle; a white Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck with signage advertising a local business, Lucas Landscaping of Indian Trail, NC. Paul Lucas, 29, president of Lucas Landscaping, was arrested and charged with a single misdemeanor count of Assault on a Female and released on $1,500 secured bond. Nathan Lucas, 22 and Randolph Mangum, 24, were each charged with single counts of misdemeanor assault and released on a $1,000 bond.

All three are due in Mecklenburg County District Court on July 22 to answer the charges.

Alleged assailant Paul Lucas
Mike Wallace – who received 12 stiches in his mouth as well as multiple cuts and bruises -- said CMPD officers told him that this was the third assault committed by the Lucas’ and Mangum at PNC Amplitheatre this year. He said his assailants “were arrested and out of jail before we were out of the hospital.”

A check of public records reveals that Mangum served 30 days of a one-year sentence in February of  2011 after being convicted of DUI, Driving With a Revoked License and Driving Under the Age of 21 While Consuming a Contraband Substance.

Wallace is a four-time winner in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, with 22 Top-5 and 66 Top-10 finishes in 494 career starts. He also has 197 starts in NASCAR’s premier Sprint Cup Series, with three Top-5 and 14 Top-10 finishes. He has not competed this season, after undergoing triple bypass surgery in April of 2015.

  1. Are you kidding me? MISDEMEANOR assault? That is just ridiculous, especially since they are known repeat offenders.

    2. There will be more charges. The cops were trying to get them on something that was guaranteed they did that night to get them in jail while they sorted the rest out.

    2. I agree on that point Chip. The third time, obviously these guys need more severe punishment.

    3. I think a fair punishment would be to tie their sorry asses behind Mike's race car and let him drive a lap around the track dragging them

  8. And we have to think, that this will be the end of Lucas Landscaping of Indian Trail, NC. I have a funny feeling that NASCAR Nation is going to swoop in, and at the very least, pester these hoodlums.

Why are they getting away with misdemeanor charges? That is not justice. That is shameful.

  12. This is great info. There are a lot of people in Charlotte I'd like to beat into unconsciousness. Now that I know it's just a misdemeanor, even after multiple instances, I'm all in.

Lucas doesn't do much business with individual homeowners. Ryan Homes and Epcon Communities are his cash cows. That's who people need to put pressure on to stop doing business with him (if they haven't already).

Three assaults by these pieces of crap in the same venue in one year??? How are they still walking the street, let alone still attending concerts at the PNC?

  17. Sad commentary on our society for sure Dave... They (Lucas Landscaping) released a statement, no apologies or even any sad feelings towards the "alledged" attack. In the statement they just attacked Mike Wallace and "his supporters" for blaming the business for the alleged actions of one of their "employees. Saying it's unfair.... http://www.wbtv.com/story/32266136/lucas-lawn-and-landscaping-statement-on-alleged-assault-of-mike-wallace .... a more accurate description of unfair would be kicking an defenseless, unconscious man while his daughter drapes herself over him to protect his already beaten face.

Can anyone provide any information about the previous incidents?

  19. These dirt bags should be charged with attempted murder!!!

  20. Did anyone report why Wallace and family were targeted? Was it just a random thing or was there any exchange prior to the physical altercations. This is just crazy to think a man walking with 2 ladies would be given such a severe beating by 3 20 something males. Sickening.
