Kenseth To Change Numbers? Roush Fenway Announcement To Come Monday

Matt Kenseth’s familiar No. 17 will change as part of a new, soon-to-be-announced sponsorship agreement.

Could Kenseth have a new number soon?
Roush Fenway Racing will make an announcement at the NASCAR Hall of Fame next Monday regarding a new number for Kenseth’s Sprint Cup Ford Fusion, as well as a new multi-year partner for RFR and the 2012 Daytona 500 winner. Kenseth and team owner Jack Roush will be on hand to make the announcement, along with representatives of the new sponsor.
No further details have been released.

In a sport where the fans now identify with the driver before car make or sponsor brand loyalty like it was originally I have to say, the #17 is Matt Kenseth and Matt is Mr #17.

  4. I was hoping Best Buy would stay on the car a bit longer... our daughter is a store manager for them so it was nice having Kennseth in the Best Buy car. But a new number??? I'm with superwrench4... the #17 is Matt Kenseth and Matt is Mr #17.

  5. This is really disappointing to me. Matt's my boy and the #17 is Matt..... Can't imagine the sponsorship deal that would separate the driver and car# to bring Jack Roush his 1st cup championship and 1st Daytona championship!!!!! This sux!!!!!!

  7. Although I will be sad if the 17 disappears...I am ecstatic that Matt is getting a multiyear sponsor. That good news far outweighs the number issue! AND....what a great reason to invest in new Kenseth Gear!

Another sponsor for us to support, and that is what it's all about. Good on Jack and company.

This isn't as big a deal as it used to be. Everyone associates DE with #3. He wasn't always #3. I liked Kahne in #9, but he's not in it now.

I agree. No Dice.lol...Kenseth has been succesful. Why would he change it?. I realize others have changed numbers, but if this is true, Real Kenseth fans will know that "it's only about the money now".....bummer

A number is just a number. That's all. The almight dollar makes the decisions these days.

The "almighty dollar" has made the decisions for a number of years.
I remember Jr. in the 8 car, Kasey Kahne in the 9 car, and Mark Martin in the 6 car. Car numbers change...

  14. best buy isn't leaving, they have several more races with kenseth and 2 with edwards this year. this just means they are getting a MAJOR new sponsor to go along with best buy.

Hes had the 17 forever... its like Gordon going to a different # or Jimmy. They have had the same # since starting Cup. We'll have to see what # hes going to...

  18. Have to imagine the sponsor won't be on the car for the full season and Best Buy will still sponsor some more races. But it will have to be a major deal to make such a radical move.

A number is not an end all-be all, but Matt and the 17 have flowed for close to 15 years now so it will be a sad change for sure

I'm sure Best Buy needs to get out of NASCAR. They just can't afford it with the state of the company right now.

And this is why I stopped buying NASCAR merchandise. It either features a sponsor or a number, both of which can change anytime without notice. Even the numbers of racers you're sure won't change, ever.
