Never one to hold back on a high-quality sound bite, Kevin Harvick told the media today that the ruling overturning most of the penalties levied against crew chief Chad Knaus and his Hendrick Motorsports team was “no different than watching… OJ go free.”
The Richard Childress Racing driver stressed that he was satisfied with the ruling put forth by Chief Appellate Officer John Middlebrook – if a little surprised by it. “I think it's fine,” said Harvick. “It's a platform for everybody to state their case, and sometimes you win and sometimes you lose; just like in the court of law."
“It's no different than watching a case like OJ and
watching (him) go free. Watching that case, there's no way you thought that (verdict)
was going to happen. Then you see the verdict, and it happens. It's very
similar to that.
"Sometimes you think something is cut and dry… and the next thing you know
it's not. You move on and you go to the next one. But there is a platform for
the teams to present their cases to a board. I've been involved in it before
from the team ownership side, and you prepare no different than you would going
to court.
“It's the exact same process.”

ReplyDeleteDo people not think before they speak. A person who allegedly got away with murder is on a far different plane than a person that might have violated a technical section rule. But that's the racer mentality I guess. He's getting away with murder when it's the other guy. They made the right call when it's you.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it is something close to illegal search and seizure except in a real court there is no fine if the whole case isn't clean. Something was there and the fine was paid but maybe evidence destroyed? Proceedures not followed? Just maybe NASCAR had to be reminded that THEY have to follow the rules too.
ReplyDelete$100,000.00 means nothing to Hendrick, 6 weeks on the bench for Knaus and 25 points for Johnson should not have been removed. Wonder what the result would be if it were anyone else other than 5 time...

Wow ... Trying not to use any bad comments or name calling, but to compare Knaus to OJ ??? Kevin you scare me !! Dude get a grip OJ was tried for double murder, murder Kevin, ginormus difference, not for an unapproved NASCAR C pillar. I now some of those Hollywood actors are weak minded, But never thought some NASCAR drivers would fall in that catagory as well, sad very sad!
ReplyDeleteDid you actually read the story before commenting? He didnt compare Chad to OJ. He said Middlebrook's verdict was shocking and unexpected, just like the OJ verdict.
DeleteOK , In this case Knauss would be playing the part of the evil OJ and the car with the questionable C-posts would be analagous to the aforementioned double murder. All in all I think it is a terrible analogy but hey, we are talking NA$CAR fans and drivers here so you have to cut a lot of slack along with a heapin' helpin' of suspension of disbelief.

Middlebrook didnt say the car 'was legal" by leaving the $100,000 fine proved it...he just gave his personal freind Rich Hendrick the most favorable deal...the points back...
This just confirms so of us suspicions..that Hendrick - GM is having to much lobbying power in Nascar..plain and simple..
If Middlebrook is not replaced..you will that giant sucking sound of fans of other brands leaving Nascar..
Not too sure about the Chad, OJ, comparison, but let's take it a step further.
ReplyDeleteThey got OJ, on something that otherwise would have probably gone away, or at the most been a wrist slap.
Chad had better watch out for the shadows. Those grey areas could get him yet.
Another round of Chad/Rick vs. NASCAR could be disruptive to the team. No matter what the outcome.
What would suprise me is not seeing Harvick jump in on a subject to create drama. If he spent less time being a drama queen and more time working on his driving he might actually win a championship.

That is certainly an interesting analogy, Dave. I too was a dumbfounded by Middlebrook's decision.
Anyone that is surprised by this decision hasnt been watching nascar for the past few years, this crowd has done everything they possibly can to drive real fans away from this sport,I never go to the races anymore and very seldom watch a whole race on TV, the whole sport is pitiful.

DeleteI listen to Dave's show as often as possible for the very reason that his is NOT a NASCAR mouthpiece. And I have listened to Dave allow some pretty ridiculous comments on his show. The contention usually occurs when the caller does want to allow Dave to respond.
