Former Girlfriend Bashes Edwards In Memoir

Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard has written a new memoir, called “In the Water They Can’t See You Cry.” Her thoughts on her former boyfriend, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Carl Edwards, may bring a tear to the eyes of his fans.

Beard, Edwards in happier times.
Edwards and Beard dated for less than a year in 2005 and 2006. At the time of their split, Beard said Edwards was simply, “too intense” for her liking. Half a decade later, however, the former Olympic gold medalist said the relationship ended “severely and permanently,” describing Edwards as domineering, intolerant and self-absorbed.

The Roush Fenway Racing driver was “adamant that his way was the only right one,” said Beard, adding that their relationship centered around Edwards’ likes and needs. “He never asked me what I might like to do,” she wrote. “He only wanted to be on Carl time. He couldn’t imagine any other kind of time.”

Edwards is little more than a sidebar to the story, appearing on just 16 of the book’s 349 pages. In that brief time, however, Beard says she became disenchanted with both Edwards and the NASCAR community. She claims Edwards would not allow her to socialize with male friends, particularly his fellow NASCAR drivers. He also requested that she stop posing in revealing swimwear in men’s magazines such as Maxim, FHM and Sports Illustrated. She spares little venom in describing NASCAR wives, as well, writing “their entire existence revolved around their significant others. Three beers and a thousand predictions later, I wanted to scream, ‘don’t you guys have lives?' They were very sweet, but I didn’t have anything in common with the rest of the women.”

Beard, who admits past issues with drugs, said the straight-shooting Edwards was horrified when she revealed her past cocaine use, saying he would never associate with someone who used drugs. “(He) didn’t even want me to have a glass of wine,” she wrote. “In that moment, I decided that I wasn’t going to tell him anything more about myself, and I never did.

“It was easy, since he never asked.”

Edwards has not commented on the book. He married Dr. Kate Downey in 2009, and they have two children; two-year old Anne and Michael, 11 months.

  1. Why is she finding so many things wrong with Edwards, they were not compatible and that does not make him a bad guy. Sounds like she has a problem supporting anyone but herself. She sounds very much into herself. Carl is lucky he got out of that situation when he did. I call it a situation because its obvious it was not a relation.

I am married to a man that has won 27 late model championships. And I love the racing community, they are family. And yes, in order to strive to be the best, you need to have every egg in one basket. Her dislike for the racing wives pretty much proves, it wasn't the place for her.

  6. "adamant that his way was the only right one." She knew she was dating a race car driver, right? Big shocker.

  8. Timing is everything. She may have a troubled past, however I didn't seem to mess up her brain.... Carl is just 6 races removed from what is arguably the most exciting season in NASCAR history. I may not agree with what she said, but her ability to have people discussing her book I can't argue with.

Does Olympic swimming pay better? Maybe match.com will help her find someone with nothing going on.

  11. You know what they say, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." Carl is a great driver, gives a great interview and always seems to be respectful to the media and the fans. I for one do not care about some negative comments from a past girl friend. Could you guys imagine what some of our past girlfriends might say about us? Wow!

  12. I believe her. Just think about all the times he got mad at other drivers an tried to kill them on the race track or tried to punch another teammate. He not that clean cut guy that they portray him to be.

  14. I could care less about his past relationships unless he's racing her. Thumbs down to past relationship stories.

Is this where we say any news is good news? Not a Carl Edwards fan myself, nor do I follow the career of Miss Beard. Guess since it's an off week we need something to talk about. Love all your articles Mr. Moody as well as the radio show. Keep up the incredible work you do. You are on the same level as Barney Hall, Ken Squire, and so many more. Look forward to hearing you in my headset at Richmond for the Nationwide race.

  16. Well we have had an idea that Edwards has a bad side for years... This is just more proof....

  17. Dave, you unfortunately are doing just what she wants, promoting her book. This kind of stuff should be ignored, then she wouldn't get the publicity she needs to sell books. come on Dave!!

Wait...let me see if I understand this. There's a girl. And she dated a guy. Then they broke up. Now she's claiming he's a jerk and that everything was his fault.

Wow!! THAT'S a unique story to hear from an ex-girlfriend. And she intends to sell books?

  19. You have to admit that Carl does have quite an ego, but then I don't know too many men that don't. This was 7 years ago and Carl has changed a lot since then. Maybe Amanda, just needed to get this off her chest to put it behind. It's freedom of speech and she has the right to speak her mind even if we don't like what she has to say.

  20. Look. She's trying to sell books. One thing I like about our sport is the relative lack of tabloid fodder compared with other sports. Sure we've had our black eyes. We're all human and prone to make mistakes. I think you've given her enough promo time. Let's not dwell on TMZ type trash. I don't watch NASCAR because I think the drivers are great at math and date hot chicks. What drivers do off the track and with whom they do it is none of my concern. Let's let Amanda bask in her glory of airing her dirty laundry for profit. Sleep tight Amanda. Buh Bye. Now, Boogity-Boogity-Boogity!!! Let's Go RACING Boys!!!
