Daytona Mulling Major Redevelopment Project

Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III commented today on a potential major redevelopment project at the speedway.

DIS President Joie Chitwood has big plans

“International Speedway Corporation, parent company of Daytona International Speedway, has filed a Planned Master Development application with the City of Daytona Beach – the first step in the pursuit of potential redevelopment projects at the ‘World Center of Racing,’” said Chitwood.

“This application process is necessary in order to establish the framework that would allow us to explore how to best shape the future of Daytona International Speedway.

Chitwood said many aspects of the project are yet to be determined, adding that the redesign could include a complete overhaul of the entire frontstretch grandstand, including new seats, suites and guest amenities, new entry points, improved fan conveyance, modernized exterior and interior areas and a redesigned midway for fans.

“Our filing with the City of Daytona Beach is only the first step in a long process,” he said, “and there are still many unanswered questions that could impact or even derail this initiative. Multiple internal and external factors will influence the economics and project feasibility, and construction design and costs must still be determined. All these must be addressed before the project can be taken to the ISC Board of Directors for the green flag of final approval.”

Chitwood cautioned, “While there is a long road ahead, we are very excited about the future of Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Beach and Volusia County. We believe the approval of this application is the first step in expanding the economic development benefits that central Florida enjoys from major motorsports. We will provide future updates as they become available.

  1. The times they are a'changing. Not moving forward these days is the same as moving backward. Hmmmm, let's see what other cliches I can think of... I guess these days they all apply to the Brave New World of Nascar. But I still love it.

  2. Daytona and many of the ISC tracks have not kept pace with SMI and Bruton Smith's tracks. ISC has no short track racing on the frontstretch area (Bruton does) ISC does not have any drag racing venues (Bruton does). It's about time they opened the wallet and made some new millenium improvements. Yes - they have done many expensive repaves but that is not a fan amenity.
