Immediately following
Saturday's NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Phoenix International Raceway, Jamie
Dick, the driver and owner of the No. 55 Viva Auto Group Chevrolet, was taken
to the infield care center after experiencing dizziness and fatigue.
After being evaluated,
Dick was sent to on evaluation, nearby West Valley Hospital for further testing.
He was admitted to the hospital Saturday evening and eventually diagnosed with
new onset diabetes.
He was released Sunday
afternoon and is now back in the Charlotte (NC) area, where he will continue to
be evaluated and treated.
"I would like to
thank everyone for their support during this difficult time,” said Dick. “It
was quite a surprise to hear the diagnosis from the doctors, but the response
from the NASCAR and PIR medical staffs was outstanding. The support from
the racing community, my Viva Motorsports team, and the fans has been
overwhelming.
“Now, I need to learn
about this disease and do whatever it takes to get back behind the wheel as
soon as possible."
Jeffrey Earnhardt will
fill in as driver of the No. 55 Viva Auto Group Chevrolet for the upcoming
NASCAR Xfinity Series event at Auto Club Speedway.
As someone who also has diabetes, the only advice I can give is for him to maintain a good exercise regimen - what I've learned is exercise helps control blood sugar levels quite a lot.
