for one of NASCAR’s premier teams, AJ Allmendinger has not forgotten his roots.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver
announced this week that he will present a scholarship to a deserving young
karter, allowing that racer to compete for the 2012 World Karting Association
championship. The championship series begins March 23-25 at Carolina
Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC, and includes the Rotax Grand Nationals in
August and SKUSA SuperNationals in November. In addition to competitive
funding, the scholarship winner will receive media and management training from
Allmendinger's personal management firm, Walldinger Racing.
Allmendinger cut his teeth
in go karts in his native California, Allmendinger earned a pair of
International Karting Federation championships, before being crowned 2002
Barber Dodge Pro Series champion. That led him to Champ Car Atlantic division
-- where he won the 2003 title – then on to the Champ Car World Series, where
he claimed Rookie of The Year honors the following season. Since joining the
NASCAR Ranks in 2006, he has competed for Red Bull Racing, Gillett-Evernham
Motorsports and Richard Petty Motorsports. He will drive Penske Racing’s #22
Shell Pennzoil Dodge on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series this season.
Applicants between the ages of
13 and 16 are encouraged to submit their CV, racing credentials, photo and a short
summary of their racing goals. Deadline for entry is March 10, 2012. For
