Mayfield Arrested On Drug Possession Charge

Jeremy Mayfield's fall from grace is now nearly complete.

The suspended NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver was arrested in his Catawba, NC, home Tuesday night and charged with possession of methamphetamine. A spokesperson for the Catawba County Sheriff's Office says deputies executed a search warrant at Mayfield's home last night after receiving a tip that there was stolen property belonging to the Red Bull Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team inside the residence. Once inside, deputies discovered approximately 1.5 grams of methamphetamine and a number of items believed to be stolen. Mayfield is currently charged only with possession of methamphetamine, pending verification that the items taken from his home are indeed stolen. Sheriff's deputies also confiscated approximately 50 guns from the Mayfield home.

Mayfield was released on $3,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning. He was suspended indefinitely from NASCAR after failing a random drug test in May of 2009, but has steadfastly maintained his innocence, claiming his test results were falsely skewed by his use of Adderal prescribed for Attention Deficit Disorder and an over-the-counter allergy medication Claritin D and . accusing NASCAR of altering the results of his drug test, failure to follow proper drug screening protocol.

Red Bull Racing President Jay Frye said today that he has no knowledge of the investigation, beyond what has been reported. “We had some stuff stolen a few months back; some electronics and other items," he said. "We provided a list of the stolen items to law enforcement at the time, and we have spoken with them periodically on the status of the case. At this point, we’re waiting to hear whether any of the items that were recovered (at Mayfield’s residence) belonged to us. At this moment, I have no idea.”

And how about his wife? She should have been arrested as well?

Someone clearly broke into his house, planted all the stolen items and drugs and he's once again being falsely accussed....atleast I'm sure that's his story and he's sticking to it!

Where there is smoke, there is fire. I wish I didn't have to be that way.

What's the over / under on how long before his wife blames Brian France for this?

Hey, a bright side: he can still be famous... We can use his before and after meth pictures in DARE classes.

  9. My question to the people that say NASCAR is framing Mayfield is "How does NASCAR benefit from using so many resources to just get rid if Mayfield?"

why would NASCAR even need to "get rid of " Mayfield? all they do is lay out rules for the teams to follow, and then the team chooses to follow the rules, or not. Mayfield got rid of himself by choosing not to follow the rules.

  11. Precisely my point! Thank you. At least now I know there are some people out there who "get it"

  12. I hope this will wake him up to his addiction . As a recovering addict it took the near loss of my family and my freedom to change my life .

I really gave Mayfield the benefit of the doubt, but it's time to call a spade a spade. What a shame!

It doesn't make anyone feel warm & fuzzy, but the truth is the truth, and now all the black helicopters can be put away in the hangar. All that's left to do now is to hope against hope that Mayfield gets the help that he needs. How this story ends is entirely up to him now.

That isn't the complexion of a meth head...No sunken cheek bones teeth not rotting out...Jeremy don't look much different than any other guy out of work 3-4 days of beard...This is not what a meth head looks like.

This has to be one of the saddest storys of someone who had it all and then threw it all away. I hope someday Jeremy can overcome his demans.

  18. Building a wall around the country will not solve this problem. It's all about individual accountability, nothing more. Jeremy's story is a very sad one. And while nobody chooses to be a drug addict, he has had multiple opportunities to change course and get his life back on the straight and narrow.

Moody: Can you find more about the stolen equipment? How would even have the opportunity to steal such equipment? I assumed he was shunned from the NASCAR scene.

  20. I never looked like a meth head either . But I spent 16 years of my life addicted to meth . I have been sober for 10 years now and other than gaining 20 pds I look much the same .

C'mon guys. Everyone knows that Nascar and the police conspired together to plant all of this at Jeremy's residence so his suit against Nascar would go away. At least I'm sure that will be his story.

And if you believe it, I've got some prime real estate for sale in the swamps of TN to sell you.

I don't profess to know anything about North Carolina law, but I don't think the penalty for that quanity of meth will not be that severe. If he has that stolen property, that will bring a more severe penalty.

Lets NOT beat him to death ! People make mistakes ALL the time. I just hope he will get the help he needs ! So sad to go from where he was to where he is NOW.... JMO

There are so many short-track racers across the United States that dream of racing in Nascar's premier division. It is sad to see someone get that opportunity and then lose it all to drug addition.

I hope Jeremey gets the help he needs to overcome his addition and get his life back in order.

it is sad. but he did make his choices in life. and as far as he looks. everyone is different. the meth heads who don't have money and aren't eating look the worst. if you have money to keep the habbit and have food, it takes longer to take it's toll.

I'm just glad that Nascar's proactive not reactive move has paid off and ask any Driver on or off the track if they would want to be on the same road as this guy. It took my wife putting a gun in my face cause when I was addicted to Crack Cocaine I almost ran over her and my kids while driving home from work and she put the gun in my face and told me if I ever drove again while I was still using drugs she would go to prison to save someones innocent life that was the day intervention found me I still don't remeber that day of work but I can only thank God for her and not letting me kill someone at work or on the way home and also keep in mind the first sign of addiction is DENIAL!! Been there done that.
