Biffle Claims Southern 500 Pole

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point leader Greg Biffle captured his second pole of the 2012 season, turning a fast lap at 180.257 mph to top qualifying for tomorrow night’s Bojangles Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

Biffle topped Jimmie Johnson and Kasey Kahne by .105 seconds for the pole, after the Hendrick Motorsports teammates turned identical laps at 27.386 seconds earlier in the session. Johnson will start third Saturday night by virtue of a higher rank in owner points, with Kahne third. Ryan Newman and Kyle Busch completed the Top 5, with Martin Truex, Jr., Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, defending Southern 500 champion Regan Smith and Jeff Burton finishing the Top-10.

Defending Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart will start 17th Saturday night, with current second-place point man Dale Earnhardt, Jr., in 24th. Four drivers failed to qualify; Scott Riggs, Michael McDowell, Stephen Leicht and Mike Bliss.
